AWS CloudTrail Adds Logging of Execution Activity for AWS Lambda Functions

You can now log the execution activity of your AWS Lambda functions with AWS CloudTrail Lambda data events. Previously, you could only log Lambda management events, which provide information on when and by whom a function was created, modified, or deleted. Now, you can also record Lambda data events and get additional details on when and by whom an Invoke API call was made and which Lambda function was executed. All Lambda data events are delivered to an Amazon S3 bucket and Amazon CloudWatch Events, which allows you to respond to events recorded by CloudTrail. For example, you can quickly determine which Lambda functions were executed in the past three days and identify the source of the Invoke API calls. You can take immediate action to restrict Invoke API calls to known users or roles if you detect inappropriate Lambda activity.

AWS Lambda Doubles Maximum Memory Capacity for Lambda Functions

You can now allocate 3008MB of memory to your AWS Lambda functions. Previously, the maximum amount of memory available to your functions was 1536MB. Now, it's easier to process workloads with higher memory or denser compute requirements, such as big data analysis, large file processing, and statistical computations.

Set Concurrency Limits on Individual AWS Lambda Functions

You can now set a concurrency limit on individual AWS Lambda functions. The concurrency limit you set will reserve a portion of your account level concurrency limit for a given function. This feature allows you to throttle a given function if it reaches a maximum number of concurrent executions allowed, which you can choose to set. This is useful when you want to limit traffic rates to downstream resources called by Lambda (e.g. databases) or if you want to control the consumption of elastic network interfaces (ENI) and IP addresses for functions accessing a private VPC.

Amazon API Gateway Supports Endpoint Integrations with Private VPCs

You can now provide access to HTTP(S) resources within your Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) without exposing them directly to the public Internet. You can use API Gateway to create an API endpoint that is integrated with your VPC. You create an endpoint to your VPC by setting up a VPC link between your VPC and a Network Load Balancer (NLB), which is provided by Elastic Load Balancing. The NLB send requests to multiple destinations in your VPC such as Amazon EC2 instances, Auto Scaling groups, or Amazon ECS services. NLBs also support private connectivity over AWS Direct Connect, so that applications in your own data centers will be able to connect to your VPC via the Amazon private network.

AWS Greengrass adds feature for Machine Learning Inference

AWS Greengrass Machine Learning (ML) Inference makes it easy to perform ML inference locally on AWS Greengrass devices using models that are built and trained in the cloud.  Until now, building and training ML models and running ML inference was done almost exclusively in the cloud.  Training ML models requires massive computing resources so it is a natural fit for the cloud.  With AWS Greengrass ML Inference your AWS Greengrass devices can make smart decisions quickly as data is being generated, even when they are disconnected.

The capability simplifies each step of deploying ML, including accessing ML models, deploying models to devices, building and deploying ML frameworks, creating inference apps, and utilizing on device accelerators such as GPUs and FPGAs.  For example, you can access a deep learning model built and trained in Amazon SageMaker directly from the AWS Greengrass console and then download it to your device as part of an AWS Greengrass group.  AWS Greengrass ML Inference includes a prebuilt Apache MXNet framework to install on AWS Greengrass devices so you don't have to create this from scratch.  The pre-built Apache MXNet package for NVIDIA Jetson, Intel Apollo Lake, and Raspberry Pi devices can be downloaded directly from the cloud or can be included as part of the software in your AWS Greengrass group.

AWS Greengrass ML Inference also includes prebuilt AWS Lambda templates that you use to create an inference app quickly.  The provided Lambda blueprint shows you common tasks such as loading models, importing Apache MXNet, and taking actions based on predictions.

In many applications, your ML model will perform better when you fully utilize all the hardware resources available on the device, and AWS Greengrass ML Inference helps with this. To let your application access the hardware resources on your device, you declare them as a local resource in your AWS Greengrass group in the AWS Greengrass console.

AWS Batch Adds Support for Large-Scale Job Submissions with Array Jobs

AWS Certificate Manager: Easier Certificate Validation Using DNS

Now, you can use AWS Certificate Manager DNS validation to establish that you own or control a domain name when requesting certificates with ACM. Certificates are used to secure network communications and establish the identity of websites over the Internet. Before issuing a certificate for your site, Amazon must validate that you own or control the domain name for your site. Previously ACM supported only email validation, which required the domain owner to receive an email for each certificate request and validate the information in the request before approving it. With DNS validation, you simply write a CNAME record to your DNS configuration to establish ownership or control of your domain name. The ACM management console can configure the DNS records for you if you manage your DNS records with Amazon Route 53. This makes it easy to validate your domain with a few mouse clicks. Once the CNAME record is configured, ACM can automatically renew DNS-validated certificates that are in use (associated with other AWS resources) before they expire, as long as the DNS record remains in place. Renewals are fully automatic and touchless.

You can now generate access logs in Amazon API Gateway. This is in addition to the detailed execution logs already provided by Amazon CloudWatch for API requests made to your APIs. The access logging feature lets you generate access logs in different formats such as CLF (Common Log Format), JSON, XML, and CSV. The access logs can be fed into your existing analytics or log processing tools so you can perform more in-depth analysis or take action in response to the log data. Any context variable can be used in the access log format.

You can now receive Amazon CloudWatch Events when files that are written to AWS Storage Gateway’s file interface (File Gateway) are uploaded to Amazon S3. You can use these notifications to trigger in-cloud or on-premises automated workflows. For instance, a file upload notification could initiate an API call to start a data processing job using AWS analytics services, such as Amazon Athena, or invoke an AWS Lambda function for transcoding. Amazon Aurora now supports Auto Scaling for Aurora Replicas

Starting today, you can use Aurora Auto Scaling to automatically add or remove Aurora Replicas in response to changes in performance metrics specified by you. Aurora Replicas share the same underlying volume as the primary instance and are well suited for read scaling. With Aurora Auto Scaling, you can specify a desired value for predefined metrics of your Aurora Replicas such as average CPU utilization or average active connections. You can also create a custom metric for Aurora Replicas to use it with Aurora Auto Scaling. Aurora Auto Scaling adjusts the number of Aurora Replicas to keep the selected metric closest to the value specified by you. For example, an increase in traffic could cause the average CPU utilization of your Aurora Replicas to go up and beyond your specified value. New Aurora Replicas are automatically added by Aurora Auto Scaling to support this increased traffic. Similarly, when CPU utilization goes below your set value, Aurora Replicas are terminated so that you don't pay for unused DB instances.

Introducing new instance sizes to the Amazon EC2 X1e Memory Optimized instance family

In September 2017, Amazon Web Services announced the new Amazon EC2 X1e instance family with the launch of the x1e.32xlarge instances. This Amazon EC2 instance size offers 3,904 GiB of DRAM available in four AWS regions, enabling customers to run larger in-memory databases such as SAP HANA. Today, five additional sizes (x1e.xlarge, x1e.2xlarge, x1e.4xlarge, x1e.8xlarge, x1e.16xlarge) of the X1e Memory Optimized instance family are being made available. Offering the highest memory per vCPU and one of the lowest price per GiB memory among Amazon EC2 instance types, the new X1e instance sizes are ideally suited for high performance databases, in-memory databases and other memory intensive enterprise applications.

Utilization Alerts for Amazon Redshift, Amazon RDS, and Amazon ElastiCache Reservations

AWS Budgets now allows you to set RI utilization alerts for your Amazon Redshift, Amazon RDS, and Amazon ElastiCache reservations, in addition to setting alerts on your Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances.

RI Utilization alerts allow you to set a custom utilization target for one or more reservations pertaining to the same AWS service, and notify you when your reservation utilization drops below that threshold. Reservation utilization tracks the percentage of reserved hours that were used by matching instances, and can be monitored by AWS Budgets at a daily, monthly, quarterly, or yearly level. You can monitor your reservation utilization at an aggregate level (e.g., monthly utilization of your Amazon RDS fleet) or at a granular level of detail (e.g., daily utilization of db.m4.2xlarge instances running in a specific region). From there, you can define up to five notifications. Each notification can be sent to a maximum of ten email subscribers, and can be broadcast to an Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) topic.

New normalized units, instance family, and region information in the AWS Cost & Usage Report

The AWS Cost & Usage Report contains the most comprehensive set of AWS cost and usage data available, including metadata about AWS services, pricing, and reservations. Starting today, you can view your normalized usage and normalization factor information for your Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS On-Demand instance usage, as well as for instance usage covered by Regional and Zonal Reserved Instances. These columns allow you to easily calculate your usage in normalized units, which can help you identify opportunities for savings.

Additionally, you can now access information related to the region and instance family associated with your usage line items. These columns allow you to group your cost and usage by a specific region (e.g., US East (Ohio)) or instance family (e.g., m4) to help you dive deeper into your underlying cost drivers and usage trends.

Working with four monitors provides additional screen space, which makes it easier to multitask, and lets you keep relevant information always visible.
