Amazon WorkSpaces now use solid-state drives (SSD) at no additional cost

Starting today, all new Amazon WorkSpaces will use general purpose SSD Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes at no additional cost. SSD EBS volumes provide superior I/O performance when compared to magnetic volumes, which results in improved application start times, boot times and a better user experience when running applications sensitive to disk latency.

With Cloud Directory, you can create directories for a variety of use cases, such as organizational charts, course catalogs, and device registries. While traditional directory solutions, such as Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) and LDAP-based directories, limit you to a single hierarchy, Cloud Directory offers you the flexibility to create directories with hierarchies that span multiple dimensions. For example, you can create an organizational chart that can be navigated through separate hierarchies for reporting structure, location, and cost center.

These services were previously available in the S3 bucket log files and are now visible using the CloudTrail console API Activity History page. This allows you to search for create, modify, and delete event activity from these services using a set of predefined filters. Easy Migration from RDS MySQL to Aurora

You’ve always been able to migrate an Amazon RDS for MySQL database to Amazon Aurora by taking a snapshot and restoring it into an Aurora cluster. But how does the Aurora database catch up to updates that happened since the snapshot was taken? This used to require setting up replication manually between the two databases. Starting today, it can be handled through a simple AWS Management Console interface. Now you can stop syncing content that has been shared with you by simply deleting the relevant files or folders in your Amazon WorkDocs “Shared with me” folder on your computer. This action updates your Selective Sync settings automatically, and removes the content from your computer. Content is not deleted from your Amazon WorkDocs account; you can still access this content at any time using the Amazon WorkDocs web client and your other computers, and you can re-enable sync using the Amazon WorkDocs Selective Sync settings. AWS Service Catalog Now Available in Canada and London Regions

AWS Service Catalog allows organizations on AWS to create and manage catalogs of IT services that are approved for use on AWS resources. These IT services can include everything from virtual machine images, servers, software, and databases to complete multi-tier application architectures. AWS Service Catalog allows you to centrally manage commonly deployed IT services, and helps you to achieve consistent governance and meet your compliance requirements, while enabling users to quickly deploy only the approved IT services that they need.

AWS Batch Now Generally Available

AWS Batch is now available for all customers. AWS Batch enables developers, scientists, and engineers to easily and efficiently run hundreds of thousands of batch computing jobs on AWS. AWS Batch dynamically provisions the optimal quantity and type of compute resources (e.g., CPU or memory optimized instances) based on the volume and specific resource requirements of the batch jobs submitted. With AWS Batch, there is no need to install and manage batch computing software or server clusters that run your jobs, allowing you to focus on analyzing results and solving problems. AWS Batch plans, schedules, and executes your batch computing workloads across the full range of AWS compute services and features, such as Amazon EC2 and Spot Instances.

There is no additional charge for AWS Batch. You only pay for the AWS resources (e.g. EC2 instances) you create to store and run your batch jobs. AWS Batch is available in the US East (N. Virginia) region.

Amazon Inspector is pleased to announce support for security assessments on Ubuntu 16.04 within Amazon EC2.
