AWS Elastic Beanstalk Supports Environment Cloning, Periodic Tasks, and 1-Click IAM Role Creation

Environment Cloning

AWS Elastic Beanstalk now supports environment cloning. Previously, you would have to create a new environment and manually configure the variables and options to match your previous environment. You can now use the Management Console or CLI to clone an existing environment with a few clicks. Elastic Beanstalk will provision the exact same resources as your selected environment and configure them the same way. We release new versions of Elastic Beanstalk environments with security updates regularly. This feature will make it easier to upgrade your environments to new versions. Periodic Tasks for Worker Tier

Elastic Beanstalk now supports Periodic Tasks for the Worker Tier environments. Worker Tier environments are optimized to process application background tasks at scale. You can now use Worker Tier environments to run tasks on a defined schedule (e.g., every minute, every hour, etc). Learn more about this new feature here.


1-Click IAM Role Creation

Elastic Beanstalk now supports one click IAM role creation. Previously, you had to copy and paste an IAM policy when you wanted to create a new IAM role and instance profile. You can now also create an IAM Role with one click for the Worker Tier.

AWS Config now available in US East (N.Virginia), US West (Oregon), EU (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Sydney)

AWS Config is now available for customers and partners to use in US East (N.Virginia), US West (Oregon), EU (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Sydney). Customers can now monitor resources for configuration changes in these regions and choose to aggregate configuration data into a common Amazon S3 bucket, or aggregate configuration changes delivered to different Amazon SNS topics into a common Amazon SQS queue.

All API calls to AWS Config now available in AWS CloudTrail

All API call made to AWS Config are now logged through AWS CloudTrail. Customers can easily determine who made changes to AWS Config settings, and who is accessing historical configuration data recorded by AWS Config.


AWS Config is a fully managed service that provides you with an AWS resource inventory, configuration history, and configuration change notifications to enable security and governance.These capabilities enable compliance auditing, security analysis, resource change tracking, and troubleshooting. AWS Config is available in US East (N.Virginia), US West (Oregon), EU (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Sydney).

Run Amazon CloudSearch on higher performance M3 instances

You can now run your Amazon CloudSearch domains on M3 instances, which provide higher, more consistent compute performance for most use-cases than previous generation instances. Starting today, you can create new CloudSearch domains on M3 instances. You can convert your existing CloudSearch domains to the M3 instance type by modifying the “Desired Instance Type” setting using the AWS Console, SDK, or CLI.

Secondary Index Scan – A simpler way to scan DynamoDB table

Amazon DynamoDB allows you to retrieve all items from a table by using the Scan operation. With Secondary Index Scan, you can now use the Scan operation on secondary indexes and retrieve all data from select attributes and items that are projected on a secondary index. Secondary Index Scan works on global and local secondary indexes. Secondary Indexes can be scanned from the DynamoDB console or by calling the Scan API with an additional parameter to specify the index. To learn more, please read our blog on Secondary Index Scan. Announcing Tagging for Amazon ElastiCache

We are pleased to announce that you can now add tags to your Amazon ElastiCache clusters and snapshots. A tag is a user-defined label expressed as a key-value pair that helps organize AWS resources, and identify them as business-specific groupings such as application names or projects. For example, developers can use tags to make it easier to allocate costs and optimize spending by tagging their ElastiCache resources with details such as a cost center, or the name of an administrator or project.

Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing support in ClassicLink

Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing now support ClassicLink, enabling you to launch EC2-Classic instances that are linked to a VPC into an Auto Scaling group. EC2-Classic instances can also be registered with Elastic Load Balancers in the VPC.


You can configure ClassicLink using the AWS Management Console, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), AWS Tools for Windows Powershell, or through the AWS SDKs. Amazon EC2 Auto Recovery now available in the US East (N. Virginia) Region

Auto Recovery is a new Amazon EC2 feature that is designed to increase instance availability. You can automatically recover supported instances when a system impairment is detected. Auto Recovery keeps your existing instance running and automatically recovers your instance on new underlying hardware, if needed, so you do not generally need to migrate to a new instance.


You can enable Auto Recovery for an instance by creating an AWS CloudWatch alarm. Choose the “EC2 Status Check Failed (System)” metric and select the “Recover this instance” action. The instance will reboot during the recovery process. The recovered instance will be identical to the original, including the same Instance ID, IP address(es) and configuration.

Now available: C4 instances, featuring the highest compute performance on Amazon EC2

You can now launch C4 instances, the latest generation of Amazon EC2 Compute-optimized instances. C4 instances are designed for compute-bound workloads, such as high-traffic front-end fleets, MMO gaming, media processing, transcoding, and High Performance Computing (HPC) applications.


C4 instances are available in five sizes, offering up to 36 vCPUs. C4 instances are based on Intel Xeon E5-2666 v3 (codename Haswell) processors that run at a base frequency of 2.9 GHz, and can deliver clock speeds as high as 3.5 GHz with Intel ® Turbo Boost. Each C4 instance type is EBS-optimized by default and at no additional cost. This feature provides 500 Mbps to 4,000 Mbps of dedicated throughput to EBS above and beyond the general purpose network throughput provided to the instance. C4 instances also provide Enhanced Networking for higher packet per second (PPS) performance, lower network jitter, and lower network latencies. The specifications of C4 instances are provided in the table below.

Amazon CloudWatch Logs in the Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney) and EU (Frankfurt) regions

We are happy to announce the immediate availability of Amazon CloudWatch Logs in the in the Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney) and EU (Frankfurt) regions. With CloudWatch Logs, you can monitor your systems and applications in near real-time using your existing log files. For example, you can use Amazon CloudWatch to notify you when errors are reported in your application log files or to view graphs of web request latencies from your web server logs. Also, you can store and access your logs in CloudWatch for as long as you need in highly durable, low-cost storage. To get started with CloudWatch Logs, install the CloudWatch Logs agent for Amazon Linux, CentOS, Redhat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Ubuntu. You can also use the EC2 Config service to start monitoring logs on Microsoft Windows. The agent can be installed in minutes using Chef, EC2 User Data or the command-line. Amazon Elastic Transcoder Now Supports Metadata Pass Through for Jobs

You now have the option to attach up to 10 custom metadata key-value pairs to your Elastic Transcoder jobs. This metadata will be included in the job notifications and when reading the job via the API or console. This custom metadata helps map your jobs to identifiers used by your internal CMS, so you can manage jobs or efficiently resume workflows upon a transcoding job completion. Earth Science on AWS with new CGIAR and Landsat Public Data Sets

To support the growing number of Earth science researchers on AWS, we are adding two new members to the collection of Public Data Sets on AWS: CGIAR Global Circulation Models (GCM) data and imagery from the Landsat 8 satellite.


We are working with CGIAR (a consortium of international agricultural research centers) to make their data more accessible and more easily available, with the expectation that it will lead to innovative ways to address critical food security and development challenges. The GCM data comes from the CCAFS Climate Portal and is available at s3://cgiardata. Please visit the Public Data Set catalog page for more information.


In support of the White House's Climate Data Initiative, we have committed to make up to a petabyte of Landsat earth imagery data from the USGS widely available as an AWS Public Data Set. By making Landsat data readily available near our flexible computing resources, we hope to accelerate innovation in climate research, humanitarian relief, and disaster preparedness efforts around the world. AWS OpsWorks Supports Existing Amazon EC2 Instances and On-Premises Servers

You can now use AWS OpsWorks with existing EC2 instances and on-premises servers. OpsWorks is a service that helps you automate operational tasks like code deployment, software configurations, package installations, database setups, and server scaling using Chef. OpsWorks gives you the flexibility to define your application architecture and resource configuration and handles the provisioning and management of your AWS resources for you. Previously, you could only deploy and operate applications on EC2 instances created by OpsWorks. Now, you can use OpsWorks to deploy, manage, and scale your application on any server such as existing EC2 instances or servers running in your own data center (your servers will need to be able to connect to AWS public endpoints).


OpsWorks costs $0.02 per hour for each on-premises server on which you install the agent, and it is available at no additional charge for EC2 instances. Click here to learn more about our pricing.

Delete All Messages in an Amazon SQS Queue

Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) is a fast, reliable, scalable, fully managed message queuing service. You can use SQS to transmit any volume of data, at any level of throughput, without losing messages or requiring other services to be always available.


You can now delete all messages in an SQS queue using the new PurgeQueue action. When you purge a queue, all the messages previously sent to the queue will be deleted. Since your queue and its attributes will remain, there is no need to reconfigure the queue to continue using it.


For example, if you are developing an application, you can make changes to the message format without replacing the queue. When debugging an application, you can clear the queue to remove potentially erroneous messages. If you are testing your application, you can drive a high message volume through it and then purge it to start fresh before entering production.


To purge a queue, log in to the AWS Management Console and choose Amazon SQS. Then, select a queue, and choose “Purge Queue” from the Queue Actions menu. The queue will then be cleared of all messages. You can also purge queues using the AWS SDKs or command-line tools.


The message deletion process takes up to 60 seconds; messages sent to the queue during this time may be deleted. If you only need to delete specific messages, you can use the DeleteMessage or DeleteMessageBatch actions. To learn more about Amazon SQS, visit: http://ift.tt/wwG7QJ

Amazon Zocalo supports 5TB files and makes phone apps available

You can now use the Amazon Zocalo Sync client to store and share files up to 5TB. The speed of uploads and downloads has been improved, and they will resume if there is an interruption in the connection.


In addition, you can now access Amazon Zocalo on your phone by downloading a mobile app for your iPhone or Android device, making it possible to share securely using your corporate credentials. Offline mode, comments, and sharing are now all possible from your phone.



The phone apps are now available to install for all devices through the Kindle,Google Play, and iOS Stores.

Amazon CloudSearch lowers prices across all regions and instance types

We are lowering prices for Amazon CloudSearch by up to 50% (depending on instance type). The price reductions apply to all AWS Regions where Amazon CloudSearch is available and will be retroactively applied for usage beginning on November 1, 2014. For example, in the US East Region, the price of a small search instance was reduced to $0.059 per hour, and the price of a large search instance was reduced to $0.236 per hour. Support for new instance types and price reduction for MapR distribution in Amazon EMR

We have added support for the latest generation Amazon EC2 instance families (M3, C3, R3, I2, and G2) for the Community (M3), Enterprise (M5), and Enterprise Database (M7) editions of the MapR Distribution in Amazon EMR.


In addition, we are lowering the hourly pricing for the Enterprise (M5) and Enterprise Database (M7) editions of the MapR Distribution in Amazon EMR. Amazon Redshift is Now Available in the AWS GovCloud (US) Region

We are delighted to announce that Amazon Redshift is now available in the AWS GovCloud (US) Region.


AWS GovCloud (US) is an isolated AWS Region designed to allow US government agencies and customers to move sensitive workloads into the cloud by addressing their specific regulatory and compliance requirements. The AWS GovCloud (US) framework adheres to U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) regulations as well as the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMPSM) requirements.


Amazon Redshift is a fast, fully managed petabyte-scale data warehouse service that costs as little as $1,000/TB/Year. Amazon Redshift enables you to encrypt your data in transit and at rest - using SSL connections between your client application and the cluster and encrypting data written to disk via AES-256. By default, Amazon Redshift takes care of key management, but you can choose to manage your keys using your own on premise hardware security modules (HSMs). Amazon Redshift can also ingest data encrypted using client side encryption on Amazon S3. Amazon Redshift logs all SQL operations, which you can access using system tables or download securely to Amazon S3. Taken together these features allow numerous customers, including Nasdaq and IMS Health, to run extremely sensitive workloads on Amazon Redshift.

Event Notification Feature in Amazon S3

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), provides developers and IT teams with secure, durable, highly-scalable object storage.


Now, Amazon S3 can send event notifications to trigger workflows or take other actions when objects are uploaded to Amazon S3. Notification messages can be sent through either Amazon SNS or Amazon SQS, or delivered directly to AWS Lambda to trigger AWS Lambda functions. For example, you could use Amazon S3 event notifications to trigger transcoding of media files when they are uploaded, processing of data files when they become available, or synchronization of Amazon S3 objects with other data stores.
