Introducing a new Amazon EC2 G2 Instance size, the g2.8xlarge

We are pleased to announce a new G2 Instance size, the g2.8xlarge. The new instance is backed by four high-performance NVIDIA GPUs, making it well suited for GPU compute workloads including large scale rendering, machine learning, transcoding, and other server-side workloads that require massive parallel processing power. With this new instance size, you can build high-performance CUDA, OpenCL, DirectX, and OpenGL applications and services without making expensive up-front capital investments.


You can launch G2 instances using the AWS console, Amazon EC2 command line interface, AWS SDKs and third party libraries. The new G2 instance is initially available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (N. California), US West (Oregon), EU (Ireland), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo) AWS regions. In addition to On-Demand Instances, customers can also purchase G2 instances as Reserved and Spot Instances. To learn more about G2 instances, visit the Amazon EC2 instances page. MongoDB on the AWS Cloud: Quick Start Reference Deployment

This new Quick Start reference deployment covers the implementation of MongoDB in a highly available architecture on the AWS cloud, using AWS services and best practices. MongoDB is an open-source, NoSQL database that provides support for JSON-styled, document-oriented storage systems. It supports a flexible data model that enables you to store data of any structure, and provides a rich set of features, including full index support, sharding, and replication.


The MongoDB Quick Start includes an automated AWS CloudFormation template, which launches and runs a multi-node MongoDB cluster on AWS. You can launch the MongoDB cluster either into an existing Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) or into a newly created Amazon VPC. Customization options include the MongoDB version, the number of replica sets, the number of sharded clusters, the number of microshards per node, and storage types and sizes. The deployment guide discusses the MongoDB architecture and implementation in detail.


The MongoDB Quick Start takes approximately 15 minutes to deploy. You pay only for the AWS compute and storage resources you use—there is no additional cost for running the Quick Start.


This Quick Start is the latest in a series of reference deployments that describe in words and diagrams the architectures for implementing popular enterprise solutions on AWS. They also include the AWS CloudFormation templates that automate the deployments.

APIs now supported for Amazon WorkSpaces

APIs are now supported for creating and managing Amazon WorkSpaces. You can programmatically manage WorkSpaces via the AWS CLI and SDKs. Download the latest AWS SDK or CLI or learn more about the APIs in our developer guide.


Actions performed on WorkSpaces via the AWS SDK and CLI can be recorded via AWS CloudTrail. Also, permissions for these actions and the WorkSpaces resources on which they act can be controlled via an AWS IAM policy.

Introducing Cognito Events: run AWS Lambda functions in response to events in Amazon Cognito

Amazon SNS now integrates with AWS Lambda: Invoke Lambda functions through SNS notifications

You can now invoke AWS Lambda functions by publishing notifications in Amazon SNS. This makes it easy to customize notifications before sending them to mobile devices or other destinations. Applications and AWS services that already send SNS notifications, such as Amazon CloudWatch, can now integrate with AWS Lambda through push notifications, without provisioning or managing infrastructure. You can also use SNS notification delivery to an AWS Lambda function as a way to publish to other AWS services such as Amazon Kinesis or Amazon S3. To learn more, visit our documentation.

Search and sort your Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) by Creation Date

Starting today, you can search and sort your AMIs by Creation Date. AMI Creation Date serves as an additional attribute to help you identify the AMI(s) you're using to launch new instances or to manage your AMI repository. Using the new attribute, you can sort AMIs based on their creation date in ascending or descending order, or search for AMIs created before or after a particular date that you define.


AMI Creation Date is now available on the AWS Management Console. You can find this attribute by going to the EC2 console and choosing AMIs on the left navigation menu. You should see a new column on the AMIs page called "Creation Date". To sort your AMIs by creation date, simply click on the column header, or use the search box to filter your AMI results by date.

AWS Recertification Update

We have released more information about our AWS Recertification policy and how to recertify at the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate level. Recertification is the process of renewing your certification credential to demonstrate your continued learning and expertise in working with AWS. AWS Certification credentials are valid for a period of 2 years. With more than 516 new features and services releases in 2014 alone, it is important that certified individuals keep skills and knowledge current by updating their certification, or “recertifying”, every 2 years. Recertification is now required for individuals who hold AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate. Recertification can be maintained by either passing a recertification exam or by advancing to the professional level. Learn more at AWS Recertification.

AWS Config now integrated with Logstorage product in Japan

Today, AWS Config and Logstorage, developed by Infoscience Corporation, Japan, is offering an integrated solution that allows AWS customers in Asia Pacific (Tokyo) region to capture their AWS Config data and manage them from a browser. Customers can create various complex searches, analyze statistics, set up alerts and reporting on AWS Config data. For example, customers can search which instances are using approved AMIs, or which security groups were recently updated. Customers also get a visual report of the configuration snapshot delivered by AWS Config. Lastly, customers can integrate their AWS Config information with AWS CloudTrail, giving them visibility into who initiated API calls, from what IP address, etc. to result in state captured by AWS Config. Logstorage is not limited to collecting AWS Config data but can also handle textual logs in any format (eg. AWS Cloudtrail, Amazon CloudWatch Logs).
