We are thrilled to announce another way for customers to install the Amazon Inspector agent on their EC2 instances. Customers can now use Amazon EC2 Systems Manager (SSM) Run Command to install the Inspector agent on a single instance or groups of instances. Previously, customers who wanted to install the Amazon Inspector agent on a fleet had to either manually install, or build their own installation script. With this launch, customers can use the AmazonInspector-ManageAWSAgent Systems Manager Document in Run Command. You can target instances you wish to install it on either by using tags or by providing instance ids. As an example, if you wanted to install the agent on all instances in an Inspector assessment target, you can specify the same tags used for creating that assessment target.

AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) has added Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and Azure SQL Database as migration sources. Amazon S3 is object storage with a simple web interface to store and retrieve any amount of data. Now that S3 is supported as both a source and a target, you can easily move your data between S3 buckets and any database supported by DMS.
You can now use Apache Livy (0.4) and new versions of Hue (4.0.1), Presto (0.184), Flink (1.3.2) and Apache Pig (0.17) on Amazon EMR release 5.9.0. Apache Livy is an application that enables you to submit, interact with, and manage Apache Spark applications over a REST interface. Hue 4.0.1 includes a redesigned interface and new SQL editor, interactive Spark notebook, and an improved job browser UI. Also, Apache Spark on release 5.9.0 now uses SSL instead of 3DES for in-transit encryption for the block transfer service, giving performance enhancements when using Amazon EC2 instance types with AES-NI. Additionally, we have added several enhancements to Spark to improve resilience and performance during Auto Scaling.

Amazon EC2 recently transitioned from hourly to per-second billing. Previously, as your jobs completed, AWS Batch would retain idle compute resources for the majority of the billing hour in order to avoid the cost associated with additional instance launches within the hour. With per-second billing, AWS customers are able to focus on their applications instead of maximizing usage to the hour. As a result, AWS Batch will now evaluate compute resources more frequently and immediately scale down any idle instances when there are no more runnable jobs in your job queues.
You can now configure your Amazon Kinesis Analytics applications to transform data before it is processed by your SQL code. This new feature allows you to use AWS Lambda to convert formats, enrich data, filter data, and more. Once the data is transformed by your function, Kinesis Analytics sends the data to your application’s SQL code for real-time analytics.
Amazon EMR is now billed in one-second increments in all AWS Regions. There is a 1 minute minimum charge per instance in your Amazon EMR cluster, and per-second billing is applicable to clusters that are newly launched or already running. The Amazon EC2 instances in your cluster, including On-Demand, Spot, and Reserved instances, and Amazon EBS volumes attached to these instances are billed in per-second increments effective October 2. Pricing is still listed on a per-hour basis, but bills are now calculated down to the second and show times in decimal form. AWS CloudFormation now allows you to protect a stack from being accidently deleted. You can enable termination protection on a stack when you create it. If you attempt to delete a stack with termination protection enabled, the deletion fails and the stack, including its status, will remain unchanged. To delete a stack you need to first disable termination protection.

You can now configure your Amazon Kinesis Analytics applications to automatically discover the schema of an Amazon S3 object. This new feature allows you to infer the schema for your streaming application by specifying sample data stored in S3. Kinesis Analytics infers column names, data types, and position of the data elements in the sample. With this new feature, you can predefine your schema prior to sending records to your Kinesis Firehose or Kinesis Streams. This builds upon the current functionality which infers the schema based on a sample of records from your data stream.
AD Connector enables you to use your existing on-premises Microsoft Active Directory (AD) identities to access the AWS Management Console and compatible AWS applications, such as Amazon WorkSpaces, Amazon Connect, and Amazon Chime. Starting today, you can further improve security for your web applications on Amazon CloudFront by selecting a pre-defined security policy that enforces TLS version 1.1 or 1.2 as the minimum protocol version. Amazon CloudFront will automatically select the cipher suite for your selected security policy which it will use to encrypt your content before returning it to viewers over HTTPS. For instance, with this feature, you can select the security policy that enforces TLS version 1.1 and weak ciphers such as RC4 and 3DES will automatically be excluded. This feature is available when you use custom SSL certificates to serve HTTPS requests using SNI.

Today, we added an integration between Amazon Cognito User Pools and Amazon Pinpoint to provide analytics for Cognito User Pools and to enrich the user data for Pinpoint campaigns. Amazon Cognito User Pools provide user directories that makes it easy to add sign-up and sign-in to your mobile or web application. Amazon Pinpoint provides analytics and targeted campaigns to drive user engagement in mobile apps using push notifications. Using Amazon Pinpoint Analytics, you can track User Pool sign-ups, sign-ins, failed authentications, daily active users (DAUs) and monthly active users (MAUs). This feature will thus enable user based analytics within Amazon Pinpoint. You can drill into the data for different date ranges or attributes like device platform, device locale, app version etc. You can also set up user attributes specific to your app using the Pinpoint SDK. These can then be used to segment your users on Pinpoint and send them targeted push notifications, emails, and SMS text messages.
Starting today, you can encrypt Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) communication between your applications and AWS Directory Service for Microsoft Active Directory, also known as AWS Microsoft AD. Many Windows and Linux applications use LDAP to read and update information about users and devices, including personally identifiable information (PII). Now you can enable LDAP over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)/Transport Layer Security (TLS), also called LDAPS, to encrypt your LDAP communications end to end. This helps you protect PII and other sensitive information exchanged with AWS Microsoft AD over untrusted networks.

You can now view Apache Spark application history and YARN application status in the Amazon EMR console. Application history is updated throughout runtime, and the history is available for up to seven days after the application is complete. Additionally, application history is still viewable after you terminate your Amazon EMR cluster. The console now includes the list of running and completed YARN applications on your Amazon EMR cluster. For each Spark application, you can drill down into granular information and easily view logs in Amazon S3 for each Spark job, task, stage, and executor.

Earlier this year, AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) introduced service-linked roles, which provide you an easy and secure way to delegate permissions to many AWS services. Today, AWS IAM added support for deletion of service-linked roles through the AWS IAM console and API/CLI. This will enable you to revoke permissions from an AWS service to create and manage AWS resources in your account.
AWS CloudTrail now allows you to automatically add your new and existing Amazon S3 buckets to S3 Data Events. S3 Data Events allow you to record API actions on Amazon S3 objects and receive detailed information such as the AWS account, IAM user role, and IP address of the caller, time of the API call, and other details. Previously, you had to manually add individual S3 buckets in your account to track S3 object-level operations, and repeat the process for each new S3 bucket. Now, you can automatically log S3 Data Events for all of your new and existing S3 buckets with a few clicks. This ensures that all S3 object-level API activity in your account is recorded to help with your data exfiltration and S3 objects usage analysis.

Now, you can reset your AWS root account’s lost multi-factor authentication (MFA) device faster by using the AWS Management Console. To reset your device, you first sign in with your root account’s user name and password, and then follow the steps to verify the email address and phone number associated with your root account. Today, Amazon AppStream 2.0 is introducing On-Demand fleets, a new type of fleet that can help you optimize your streaming costs. With this addition, you can now select between two different types of fleets when building your AppStream 2.0 streaming environment. With Always-On fleets, users get instant-on access to their applications, but you are charged streaming fees for all instances in the fleet, even if no users are connected. With On-Demand fleets, users experience a small delay accessing their first application. However, you are only charged streaming fees for instances when users are connected, and a small, fixed hourly fee for instances in your fleet that are not being used. Amazon EC2 Spot now allows Amazon EBS-backed instances to be stopped in the event of interruption, instead of being terminated when capacity is no longer available at your preferred price. Spot can then fulfill your request by restarting instances from a stopped state when capacity is available within your price and time requirements. To use this new feature, choose “stop” instead of “terminate” as the interruption behavior when submitting a persistent Spot request. When you choose “stop”, Spot will shut down your instance upon interruption. The EBS root device and attached EBS volumes are saved, and their data persists. When capacity is available again within your price and time requirements, Spot will restart your instance. Upon restart, the EBS root device is restored from its prior state, previously attached data volumes are reattached, and the instance retains its instance ID.
