On the longest day of the year, spare a thought for the Brits experiencing the shortest, darkest day of the year -- those overwintering in Antarctic research bases.
The BBC World Service has broadcast a special programme to the scientists and technical and support staff who keep the bases running during the southern winter, while we're getting out the barbecues in Britain. Once a year, on 21 June, staff at the four bases will crowd around their shortwave radios to listen to music requests and messages sent by their families back home.
