Report: Fracking can cause earthquakes, but risk to humans is low

Wyoming drill

A report by the US National Research Council has found that fracking can cause earthquakes, but the controversial process is not a major risk factor for quakes that are actually strong enough for people to feel.

Fracking is a process where highly-pressurised liquid is pumped deep below ground, fracturing great veins in the rocks. Oil and natural gas seeps out, which can then be harvested. It's a contentious process, but it offers the potential to unlock vast quantities of fuel.
