Cern announces discovery of particle, consistent with Higgs boson

Cern

Two experiments at the £6 billion physics laboratory Cern have observed a new particle in the mass region around 125-126 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), which is consistent with the elusive Higgs boson.

"The results are preliminary but the five sigma signal at around 125 GeV we're seeing is dramatic," said Joe Incandela, spokesperson of the CMS experiment. "This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it's the heaviest boson ever found."
