Europe looks to Greenland to extract gems and minerals

The European Commission's vice president, Antonio Tajani, has said that he is "working very hard with the prime minister of Greenland" to open up mining operations across the Arctic island.


Europe plans to get at the natural resources, rare earth minerals and gemstones, by taking advantage of the island's rapidly melting ice sheets. This July, three Nasa satellites observed as an estimated 97 percent of Greenland's ice sheet thawed.
