Noisy, copulating flies attract hungry bats

Natterer's bats

"Sex kills" says ecologist Stefan Greif -- if you're a fly, that is. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology have found that bats are able to find and kill copulating flies by listening out for their noisy wing movements.

Researchers have long hypothesised that most animals have adapted to mate very quickly because copulating critters are at a higher risk of being discovered and eaten. Animals in the act have decreased attention, a reduced flight response and are more conspicuous.
