What does a Higgs boson look like?

Higgs

Jon Butterworth, professor of physics at UCL who hunts the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider, has a cartoon picture of what the elusive particle looks like. "I usually see a little wave impulse, like a ripple passing down a slinky," he says. "But I know it's wrong."

While we can't be certain, fundamental particles probably don't look like a child's spring. There is a plethora of bizarre analogies that attempt to explain the Higgs -- one compares the particle to Margaret Thatcher at a cocktail party.
