Astronauts spot elusive red sprite from the International Space Station

Astronauts on the International Space Station have snapped a picture of an elusive atmospheric phenomenon called a "red sprite".


These are intense electrical explosions that occur high above thunderstorms. Their red jellyfish-like tendrils send pulses of electrical energy up toward the edge of space, but they only last for one thousandth of a second.
