Graphene changes properties depending on what's beneath it

Graphene

Graphene -- the super-strong, self-healing, atom-thick material -- has a secret weapon. MIT researchers have found that graphene changes its fundamental properties depending on the material beneath it.

Place an ultra-thin graphene layer on silicon dioxide, and the graphene can readily become reactive when exposed to certain chemicals. When the graphene is sat on boron nitride, those same chemicals barely have an effect.
