Proposed MPEG video codec is twice as efficient, arrives in 2013

MPEG

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has revealed a video compression standard which promises to halve the bandwidth of video without affecting the quality.

It's called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), and it essentially doubles the compression of the current H.264 standard. It will reduce bandwidth, allow TVs to stream video at even higher resolutions, or double the number of channels on the same bandwidth.
