McLaren went to the fore at Monza on Friday afternoon, as Lewis Hamilton edged out team mate Jenson Button by 0.038s while the Ferraris gave valiant chase. Hamilton lapped in 1m 25.290s shortly after Button had gone fastest with 1m 25.328s. Fernando Alonso was not far behind, however, with 1m 25.348s and Felipe Massa backed him strongly with 1m 25.430s. The Spaniard had a miserable session after a brake issue followed by a suspected gearbox problem limited him to just 17 laps.
