Web Index: Sweden tops the Web Foundation's global ranking

The Web Foundation, led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, has launched the Web Index, a global ranking that measures the impact of the web on the world's people and nations.

Sweden has come top in the country-by-country global study, which uses data from the last five years to rank 61 nations according to the state of the web and its political, economic and social impact. The United States comes second in the ranking, followed by the UK, Canada, Finland and Switzerland.

Berners-Lee explained to Wired.co.uk: "We hear a lot of anecdotes about how people in rural Africa are using the internet to bring wealth to their local region, but where is the data? There are no other indexes out there that address not just connectivity but the web and the world of information. Is it really functioning and helping humanity? Is the web serving the world?"
