Politicians should boost engineering talent, but otherwise leave startups alone

Governments can help foster a startup ecosystem by launching engineering schools and starting funds, but otherwise, leave it alone to develop naturally, said a panel of founders and venture partners at Web Summit in Dublin.

The panel, including Max Niederhofer of Accel Partners, Noel Ruane of Polaris, Jason Whitmire of Earlybird and cofounder of Blip Dina Kaplan, was asked whether government involvement can be a good thing, and the general consensus was yes -- but not too much. It was suggested that a naturally-occuring ecosystem should provide its own funding -- successful startups will go on to become angels and investors, cycling back the knowledge, expertise and funds to their own community. If that's to be a reality, however, surely they need some incentive to stay on.
