Theresa May blocks extradition of hacker Gary McKinnon

Home secretary Theresa May has announced that British hacker Gary McKinnon will not be extradited to the United States.

McKinnon admits hacking into US government computers, but denies malicious intent, saying he was looking for evidence of UFOs. He has been fighting against extradition since 2002.

May said that McKinnon, who has Asperger's syndrome, is "seriously ill" and at risk of ending his life if extradited to such a degree that it was incompatible with his human rights. As such the extradition order against him has been withdrawn and it is now up to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, to decide if he should face trial in the UK.
