Antarctic ocean protection bid falters

Proposals to protect vast swathes of the oceans around Antarctica from exploitation have failed to attract consensusat an international summit.


The 25 members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, or CCAMLR, could not agree on plans to establish three enormous protected areas in Antarctica -- around the Ross Sea, around Eastern Antarctica, and in areas exposed by collapsed ice sheets close to the Antarctic Peninsula.
