Has Microsoft missed its chance with Office on mobile?

Office on Android and iOS

It seems that, at long last, Microsoft Office is coming to iOS and Android. Hooray. You'll finally be able to natively edit Word docs on your iPad as the good Lord intended them to be edited: in a software package made by Microsoft. A few years ago, this would have been huge. But times have changed, and Microsoft has a tough fight to make this long-awaited release matter.

Let's say it's 1998 and you want to write a memo. You want that memo to look nice, and you want to make sure your boss, who works on a different kind of computer, has a chance to edit it before you send it out. Odds are, you're going to use Microsoft Word to write that memo. Likewise, Microsoft Excel was the spreadsheet program everyone had. Together, along with their companion applications for presentations and email management, they formed a juggernaut productivity suite. There was no touching Microsoft Office.
