Lets be clear about this. On 21 December 2012, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar will begin the next b'ak'tun, and the world will not end.
To be clearer still, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is just one calendar system that was used throughout pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, by civilizations including the Maya. Within the Long Count calendar, 20 days make an uinal, 18 uinals make a tun, 20 tuns make a k'atun, and 20 k'atuns make a b'ak'tun (a period of 394 years).
