Temperature records for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) are nearly double that suggested by previous research and suggest the ice sheet is undergoing nearly twice as much warming as predicted.
The readings taken from the Byrd Station on the WAIS reveal a 2.4C increase in temperature since 1958. That increase is enough to mark the region as one of the fastest-warming places on Earth as well as triggering concerns about rising sea levels.
