A computer program capable of reverse engineering extinct languages has been created by a team from Canada and Colifornia.
The system takes theories and rules about how the spoken word change over time to work and applies them to contemporary languages. It is then possible to both test the theories and establish reconstructions of extinct root languages which act as common ancestors.
