BehavioSec invents alternative to passwords using biometric fingerprints

Behaviosec

Swedish startup BehavioSec has invented an alternative to passwords. "Instead, we identify you by your biometric fingerprint," says CEO Neil Costigan. This includes a combination of ways in which you interact with your device, such as the force with which you hit a key, the angle you use to swipe a touchscreen, or your typing speed.

Founded in 2009 by computer engineering students Peder Nordström and Olov Renberg at the Luleå Technical University in Sweden, the company now counts Sweden's top ten national banks and Samsung among its clients. Its software is embedded in a bank's website or in its app so it can scan a user's "fingerprint" in the background. "Our machine-learning algorithm builds up a unique profile and a biometric score, and compares it every time your device is used," he says. If you fail the biometric score, you need to provide more authentication.
