In a few months' time we will witness the Icarus-like death of a blob of interstellar gas as it falls into a super-massive black hole at the galaxy's centre. And for the first time in human history we're ready to take notes, armed with advanced telescopic devices and knowledge of Einstein's physics.
But we could do so much better. We've managed to recreate the birth throes of matter in our giant particle accelerators. Now we need to flip the picture around and pursue matter where it exits conventional reality and passes across the event horizons of black holes throughout the universe.
