The future is lonely, according to Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino (Wired 02.11). "By 2015, almost 40 percent of the UK population will be living by themselves," says the east London-based creative designer. "There's a need for reassurance, something you can glance at that tells you that a loved one is OK." Her solution? The Good Night Lamp, which, when switched on, also lights up smaller lamps elsewhere on the internet of things. "You can make a street of your friends," says the 32-year-old. "When someone gets home and switches on their big lamp, their little lamp in your street will light up. It's a good way to say, 'I'm home'."
