Disney uses vortices for mid-air tactile gaming feedback

Aireal

Researchers at Disney have created a vortex-firing, 3D-printed feedback device that will let Kinect and Wii gamers feel the effects of their gestures.

The Aireal feedback device fires loops of compressed air -- invisible "smoke" rings -- that can create tactile effects ranging from the sensation of a butterfly resting on your arm, to a swatting a ball during a tennis match.

Developed by Disney Research in Pittsburgh, the device is due to be unveiled at an international conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques in Califronia from 21-25 July.
