New school curriculum emphasises coding, climate change, 3D design

Primary school children as young as five will be taught how to create simple computer programs, according to the final version of the new national curriculum published on 8 July.

The new curriculum puts a significant emphasis on computing skills, scrapping simple word processing in favour of more demanding tasks like coding and understanding algorithms. By the end of Key stage 3, pupils should be able to use two or more programming languages, understand binary digits and use multiple skills to undertake creative projects, the curriculum says.

The computing section of the curriculum also stresses that as soon as they start school, pupils will be taught about keeping personal information private, and this continues to be emphasised in each key stage.
