Amazon RDS now supports new T2 Instances, starting at just $6 a month

You can now take advantage of the T2 instance type with Amazon RDS. T2 instances are a new low-cost standard instance type designed to provide a baseline level of CPU performance with the ability to burst above the baseline. These instances are recommended for workloads that don't use the full CPU often or consistently, but occasionally need to burst to higher CPU performance, such as small database workloads in test and developer environments.

T2 DB Instances feature the latest Intel Xeon processors with clock speeds up to 3.3 GHz during burst periods and are offered at prices up to 40% lower than comparable T1/M1 DB Instances.

Amazon RDS supports the use of T2 DB Instance types with MySQL 5.6, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server (except for Standard Edition — License Included). Support for MySQL versions 5.1 and 5.5 is coming soon. T2 DB Instances are available in all AWS Regions except GovCloud (US).

To use T2 DB Instance types, you can either launch a new DB Instance or perform a scale operation on an instance running a supported engine type. Amazon RDS for MySQL customers running MySQL 5.5 who wish to use T2 instances should first upgrade from MySQL 5.5 to MySQL 5.6 before performing an instance scale operation.

Pricing for T2 DB Instances starts at $0.008/hour (effective price) for 3 year Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances and $0.017/hour for On-Demand usage. These pricing examples are for MySQL DB Instances in the US East (N. Virginia) AWS Region. For more information on pricing, visit the Amazon RDS pricing page.
