A Stanford graduate has announced the launch of a US crowdfunding site that gives the public the opportunity to create and broadcast political adverts to compete with corporate-funded campaigns.
"It's about giving everyday people a megaphone," Social Teeth founder Elaine Chang explained to Wired.co.uk. The graduate has David Cameron's strategist Steve Hilton -- who is at Stanford on a sabbatical -- on board as an advisor, and is prepped to launch the site on 1 August.
The US public is used to sifting through the barrage of propaganda from political parties and the corporations that support them every time election season rolls around. However, after the US judicial system ruled in favour of non-profit corporation Citizens United in 2010, matters have become increasingly worse. The ruling stated that the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, which allowed the government to restrict money spent by corporations and unions on independent political campaigns, violated the First Amendment.
