A Tokyo bakery is trialling a visual recognition system that knows its maple twists from its croissants and can ring up a bill total in a second.
The system, installed at Tokyo's Dominique Geulin bakery up until 28 July, identifies the goods by registering different shapes and colours. Customers simply need to place their tray of goods under an installed camera and the system will record the image, process the data via an algorithm and display the total bill at the till. If you want it to spot the difference between your ham sandwiches and your cheese ones, you'll have to make sure it faces the camera directly (it needs to get a good look at the filling).
