Soft-bodied MIT robot crawls like an earthworm

Meshworm

Researchers at MIT have made a robotic earthworm that can inch forward by squeezing and stretching its artificial muscles.

It mimics a type of movement called peristalsis, where muscles contractions are used to propel different organisms and organs. Worms, snails and sea cucumbers use the mechanism, and human gastrointestinal tracts use a similar action to push food to the stomach.
