Rogue geoengineer creates massive Pacific plankton bloom

An American businessman is under fire after dumping 100 tonnes of iron sulphate into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Canada under the guise of a geoengineering experiment.


Russ George, who claims to be the world's leading "champion" of geoengineering, created an artificial plankton bloom around 10,000 square kilometres across -- so large it was visible from space. His hope was that the plankton would absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, die, and then sink to the sea bed.
