Man arrested after days of outcry over Twitter rape threats

A man has been arrested after a feminist campaigner was deluged with rape threats and graphic abuse on Twitter.

Caroline Criado-Perez, who had successfully campaigned for Jane Austen to be depicted on future ten pound English banknotes, revealed late last week that her achievement had been overshadowed by hostile and misogynistic messages from a number of Twitter users.

At 5.57pm on 28 July, Ms Criado-Perez tweeted that an arrest had been made. The Metropolitan police later confirmed to Wired.co.uk that a 21-year-old man had indeed been arrested in the Manchester area on suspicion of harassment offences in connection with "an allegation of malicious communications".
