Solar-powered aeroplane Solar Impulse has become the first aircraft to to fly coast-to-coast across the US without using any fuel.
A rip in the fabric on the lower side of the left wing meant Solar Impulse was forced to terminate its flight three hours earlier than scheduled, but it landed successfully at New York's John F. Kennedy airport in the early hours of Sunday morning. The plane had taken off from Washington Dulles on Saturday, flying for 18 hours 23 minutes to complete the final leg of its 5,650km journey. In total, the trip took 105 hours and 41 minutes, with Solar Impulse travelling at an average speed of 28.8kt (53.3km/h).
