AWS OpsWorks Supports Application Environment Variables
AWS OpsWorks now allows users to define environment variables per application. Instead of creating a custom recipe and managing environment variables as Chef attributes, you define the environment variables on each app and OpsWorks takes care of securely storing and sending the environment variables from your OpsWorks app definition to your instances and adding them to the application server context. All you have to do is reference the environment variables in your application's code using the methods defined in the Java, Ruby, PHP, and Node.js application servers. The environment variables are passed to the application server during instance setup and can be updated on each application deployment. Environment variables can also be defined as protected values, so that they cannot be read by OpsWorks users. For example, a user can set separate environment variables for database endpoint, username, and password. The password environment variable can be defined as a protected value, so it cannot be viewed in the console, SDK or CLI and is only made available to the defined application.

Microsoft SharePoint 2013 Quick Start Reference Deployment
This new Quick Start Reference Deployment covers the implementation of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 in a highly available architecture on the AWS cloud. The automated solution used to deploy the Quick Start is provided by an AWS CloudFormation template that allows you to choose a highly available architecture that is sized for medium or large environments based on your input. Additionally, the foundation for this environment will utilize the Active Directory Domain Services and Microsoft SQL AlwaysOn Availability Group Quick Starts, which are deployed in a highly available architecture across two Availability Zones. This Quick Start Reference Deployment discusses how the Microsoft SharePoint environment is built so that you can deploy the automated solution or customize the provided AWS CloudFormation template to meet your own requirements.
This Quick Start is the fifth in a series of new Reference Deployments that describe in words and diagrams the architectures for implementing popular enterprise solutions on AWS. They also include the AWS CloudFormation templates that automate the deployments.
To get started with Microsoft SharePoint 2013 on AWS, use the following resources:
- Download the Microsoft SharePoint 2013 Quick Start Reference Deployment Guide
- Browse and launch other AWS Quick Start Reference Deployments

Elastic Load Balancing Introduces Support for Tagging
Elastic Load Balancing now allows you to tag your load balancers to simplify the administration of your AWS resources.
A tag is a user-defined label that helps you organize your resources into groupings such as application names or projects. You can also use tags to make it easier to allocate costs and optimize spending, for example by tagging a load balancer with details such as a cost center, or the name of an administrator or project.
You can add, view, and remove tags by using the AWS Management Console, API, or AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI).

Introducing Multi-Factor Authentication for Amazon WorkSpaces
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) for Amazon WorkSpaces is now available. MFA can provide you with an additional layer of security during the authentication process. Users must validate their identify by providing something they know (e.g. password), as well as something they have (e.g. hardware or software generated one-time password (OTP)).
Amazon WorkSpaces is a fully managed desktop computing service in the cloud. It allows customers to easily provision cloud-based desktops that allow end-users to access the documents, applications and resources they need with the device of their choice, including laptops, iPad, Kindle Fire, or Android tablets.
Support for MFA means you can use your existing RADIUS-based authentication solution with Amazon WorkSpaces. MFA can help you prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to resources, while defending against common password attacks such as phishing and keystroke logging. To learn more, please see our documentation.

New Elastic MapReduce commands on the AWS CLI
We have added a new set of commands for Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR) to the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI). These commands will allow you to create, describe, manage, and terminate your Amazon EMR clusters using the AWS CLI. Also, these new commands offer an improved syntax than those on our previous Ruby-based CLI. In the future, we will only be adding new Amazon EMR functionality to our commands on the AWS CLI, and we will not be updating our Ruby-based CLI. The AWS CLI is easy to install and allows you to interact with multiple AWS services using a single tool.
The new Amazon EMR commands are available on the AWS CLI version 1.4.0 or later. If you have previously installed the AWS CLI, please upgrade to a supported version using "pip install --upgrade awscli" (view complete upgrade instructions here). If you have not installed the AWS CLI, please see our installation instructions and our configuration instructions. You can learn more about our new commands in the AWS CLI Reference or type "aws emr help" at your shell prompt.

Amazon RDS now supports new T2 Instances, starting at just $6 a month
You can now take advantage of the T2 instance type with Amazon RDS. T2 instances are a new low-cost standard instance type designed to provide a baseline level of CPU performance with the ability to burst above the baseline. These instances are recommended for workloads that don't use the full CPU often or consistently, but occasionally need to burst to higher CPU performance, such as small database workloads in test and developer environments.
T2 DB Instances feature the latest Intel Xeon processors with clock speeds up to 3.3 GHz during burst periods and are offered at prices up to 40% lower than comparable T1/M1 DB Instances.
Amazon RDS supports the use of T2 DB Instance types with MySQL 5.6, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server (except for Standard Edition — License Included). Support for MySQL versions 5.1 and 5.5 is coming soon. T2 DB Instances are available in all AWS Regions except GovCloud (US).
To use T2 DB Instance types, you can either launch a new DB Instance or perform a scale operation on an instance running a supported engine type. Amazon RDS for MySQL customers running MySQL 5.5 who wish to use T2 instances should first upgrade from MySQL 5.5 to MySQL 5.6 before performing an instance scale operation.
Pricing for T2 DB Instances starts at $0.008/hour (effective price) for 3 year Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances and $0.017/hour for On-Demand usage. These pricing examples are for MySQL DB Instances in the US East (N. Virginia) AWS Region. For more information on pricing, visit the Amazon RDS pricing page.
To learn more about T2 DB Instances, see the Amazon RDS instance class table.
