Computer program can reconstruct extinct languages

Rosetta Stone replica

A computer program capable of reverse engineering extinct languages has been created by a team from Canada and Colifornia.

The system takes theories and rules about how the spoken word change over time to work and applies them to contemporary languages. It is then possible to both test the theories and establish reconstructions of extinct root languages which act as common ancestors.

Startup of the Week: Autographic Insight

Autographic Insight is a "creative data" company that builds interactive, automated dashboards for visual reporting pulling in multiple data sources in real time. The team aims to present data that would typically be placed in static charts in Excel and PowerPoint in a more visually-engaging and dynamic way -- somewhere between and infographic and a dashboard. The team works with clients to create web-based reports which automatically update using key metrics within the business, with a view to cut the amount of time staff spend in reporting. The company was launched by Max Lewis, who says he's experienced "fist hand the time wasted on routine reports, the poor presentation of these reports and consequently the lack of interest shown in them." He works alongside creative director David Jacobs and data analyst and technical director Leon Pidgeon. Wired.co.uk caught up with Jacobs.

This flower can be used as a lithium-ion battery or a super capacitor

Energy bloom

This delicate pink flower is a power storehouse. Made from the semiconductor germanium sulphide, the structure "can be used as a lithium-ion battery or a super capacitor", says Linyou Cao, a material scientist at North Carolina State University, who co-authored a paper on the substance. The secret to its abilities is in its shape: each nanopetal is about 0.1mm long but only 20nm thick, and thousands of petals make up the flower. "Because of its surface area, more lithium ions can be crammed into this space than in a standard battery," says Cao.

Vulnerability lets hackers control building locks, lifts and CCTV

CCTV

A critical vulnerability discovered in an industrial control system used widely by the military, hospitals and others would allow attackers to remotely control electronic door locks, lighting systems, elevators, electricity and boiler systems, video surveillance cameras, alarms and other critical building facilities, say two security researchers.

The vulnerability in the Tridium Niagara AX Framework allows an attacker to remotely access the system's config.bog file, which holds all of the system's configuration data, including usernames and passwords to log in to the framework and control systems managed by it.

Mystery of Kim Jong-Un's choice of smartphone intrigues South Korea

Kim Jong-Un's smartphone

Kim Jong-Un has a smartphone -- you might struggle to make it out in the poor quality picture, above, released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) -- and the South Korean media is all in a tiz wondering which model it is.

It might not seem to the most remarkable of news, and indeed when the picture was released on 27 January to accompany an otherwise dry report about a meeting at an undisclosed location somewhere in the Hermit Kingdom there wasn't much notice paid at first either. But, AFPreports, when the South Korean media picked up on it the discussion quickly became one of frenzied speculation. Could he, they wondered, be using a Samsung smartphone? If he is, it's a pretty careless way of de facto accepting that the South is more technologically advanced than the North.
